The Bible and Science: How Scripture Speaks to the Created World
The Bible and science help us understand the same created world in different ways. Science describes how the world works. Scripture tells us Who made it and why. We can study both with care because all truth belongs to God.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1 CSB)
I teach chemistry Monday through Friday and preach on Sunday. I spend my weekdays studying how the world works and my weekends pointing to the One Who made it. These parts of my life belong together. Science tells us how. Scripture tells us Who. That is the line I want to keep coming back to.
Two Books, One Author
Christians have long used the phrase “two books” to describe Scripture and creation. Both belong to God. Scripture speaks with God’s authority. Creation shows His power and wisdom.
Psalm 19 puts them side by side. The first half is about the skies declaring God’s glory. The second half is about His written Word reviving the soul. The same psalm points us to the same God through His world and His Word.
Paul also says that creation shows us something true about its Maker. “For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made.” (Romans 1:20 CSB) A cell, a galaxy, or a chemical bond can give us another reason to stand in awe of God.
Science tells us how. Scripture tells us Who.
Why Faith and Science Can Feel in Conflict
The conflict between faith and science feels real to many people. Some were taught to fear every scientific question. Others were told that science has explained God away. Those messages can make honest questions feel unsafe.
The trouble often starts when we ask one source to answer a question it was not made to answer. Genesis 1 reveals the Creator and the goodness of His work. A chemistry textbook explains matter and change. Chemistry cannot tell you why you are loved. Genesis was not written as a modern lab report.
These questions belong together, but they are still different questions. Science studies how creation works. Scripture tells us Who made it and why it matters.
What Scripture Says About the Created World
What does the Bible say about the physical world and its meaning?
It says God made the world. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 CSB) Creation begins with God’s will and work.
It says the world holds together in Christ. “For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth ... and by him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17 CSB) The laws I teach my students and the order I see in the world point me back to Christ. The same Person I have written about as the One who is enough for everything.
And it says the world is the kind of place where God draws near. The Maker of galaxies is also the God who meets us right where we are. The scale never makes Him distant.
Study With Honesty and Worship
How does this work on an ordinary day for a believer who takes evidence seriously? Study the world with honesty and worship its Maker. You can use a microscope during the week and read your Bible every day.
When you learn something new about how the world works, thank God for what you found. Careful study is one way to love Him with your mind.
You can also hold your questions without panic. Faith gives us a safe place to bring unanswered questions. Some of the most worshipful people I know are also the most curious. Careful study can deepen our wonder. That wonder is part of what it means to be changed by the love of God, mind and heart together.

The Heavens Still Declare God’s Glory
The heavens declare the glory of God. That was true when David wrote it under the stars. It remains true when we study the world through a telescope or microscope.
The Bible and science ask different questions about one world made by God. Science can explain how light travels. Scripture tells us that the heavens declare God’s glory.
Science tells us how. Scripture tells us Who. Careful study can lead us to worship.
