Look at Psalm 147:3. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." (CSB) The same word David uses for sickness elsewhere is the word he uses here for grief. God's healing reaches further than the part of us we can point to.

God is doing more than we can see. Psalm 34:18. "The LORD is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit." The God of the Bible is not far off. He does not wait for you to compose yourself before drawing close. He moves toward the crushed. If that is where you are, He meets us where we are, not where we wish we were.

Isaiah 40:28-31. "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God... He gives strength to the faint and strengthens the powerless. Youths may become faint and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who trust in the LORD will renew their strength." (CSB) Isaiah is writing to a people in exile, away from home, with no clear path back. To them God says, I do not run out. The eagles' wings here are not about feeling lifted up. They are about being carried when you cannot carry yourself.

Matthew 11:28-30. "Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (CSB) Jesus does not call only the strong. He calls the weary. The yoke is shared work, an animal pulling beside another. He is not asking you to pull harder. He is saying you do not pull alone.

Romans 8:18. "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us." (CSB) Paul does not minimize suffering. He weighs it against what is coming. The pain is real. It is also not the end.

1 Peter 5:7. "Casting all your cares on Him, because He cares about you." (CSB) The casting is the verb. You hand it over. You do not carry what was not yours to carry. God carries it for you because He cares for you.

Pain is part of our lives on earth. The verses do not erase it. They give us a place to put it: squarely on the shoulders of the God Who chose to enter our pain with us.

Healing That Sometimes Takes Longer Than We Want

Some healing comes quickly. Some healing comes slowly. Some healing won’t happen until we see Him face to face.

I do not know why God chooses to give some life and to allow death to come too soon to others. We have buried people we loved. We have prayed for healings that did not come the way we asked. The Bible does not pretend this away, and neither should we. I’ve written before about praising God in life and death, and a lot of the same principles apply here.

What scripture tells us is that God is not absent in the slow healing. James 5:14-15 tells the church to pray for the sick and to anoint them with oil. The instruction is not "pray and immediately see results." The instruction is to keep praying, to keep coming into God’s presence, and to trust the Lord with the outcome.

If you are reading this in the middle of slow healing, please hear this. The God who sent Jesus to save you is the same God Who will see you through to the end of your suffering. A slow answer to prayer (as we understand slowness) is not a measure of how much He loves you or how close He is to you.

How to Pray These Verses

The Psalms teach us to pray scripture, not just read it. When the words will not come, pray the verse, out loud if you can, in the first person.

"Lord, You are near me. I am brokenhearted. Save me from this crushing." (Psalm 34:18)

Do not worry about whether you ‘feel’ the prayer. The truth of it does not depend on your feelings. He hears the spoken word. He hears the silent word. He hears the prayer that is just a name. If your faith feels too small for this season, He will make you stand with strength that is not your own.

What to Hold Onto When the Verses Are All You Have

There are seasons when the only thing you can do is keep showing up to the Bible and the presence of God. You cannot teach a class. You cannot serve at church. You cannot make the meal you said you would make. You can open the Bible and read a verse and let God use it to strengthen you.

Healing in scripture is rarely a lightning strike. More often it is the daily turning toward God, even when the turning is small. Even when the turning is just remembering the verse from yesterday. Even when the turning is a one-word prayer.

He is near the brokenhearted. He gives strength to the weary. He calls the burdened to come. His promises don’t change. They’re new as our troubles are new.

He is near. That has been enough for me, and it will be for you.
